Corentin Jennar is a playable character in Triangle Strategy. He is a recruitable character available if the player chooses to travel to Hyzante in Chapter III, Part I: Whither the River Flows.

Profile/Story[]

Ministry Researcher[]

Prior to chapter 3, Corentin worked as a researcher for the Ministry of Medicine in Hyzante. Despite disagreeing with the Holy State's principal on research, he put up with it so as not to be persecuted by Hyzante's laws. A colleague of his, Plinius Naveste, planned to escape Hyzante and leak ministery research. Corentin was aware of this secret plot and understood his colleague's motivations, but he feared what might come of rebelling against the Ministry, so he did not join nor report Plinius.

Magic Researcher[]

One day, when Serenoa Wolffort and his group visit Hyzante, Plinius finally puts his plan into action. However, Corentin apprehends Plinius with the help of Serenoa's group and Exharme Marcial. Once the dust settles, Corentin speaks with Serenoa in private and asks to join the group, so he may study freely. Serenoa accepts Corentin's plea.

Erador Ballentine introduces Corentin to the world of alcohol, in which Corentin finds himself to be a lightweight. With Erador's encouragement, Corentin is able to discover Norzelia's first ever non-melting ice. The two toast to this resounding discovery, and Corentin is relieved his magic research has beared fruit.

Character Stories[]

A Swig Too Many[]

Erador invites Corentin to take a break from all his research.

  • Erador: Workin' hard again today, I see. How fares the research?
  • Corentin: It progresses. And shall continue to do so, provided you remain out of my way.
  • Erador: Hah! Never one to mince words, are ye? What is it yer researchin', exactly?
  • Corentin: Your questioning remains distressingly inefficient. As I explained just yesterday, I am exploring something truly groundbreaking.
  • Erador: An' I'm askin' ye precisely how an' why it's groundbreaking.
  • Corentin: That would entail a thorough explanation of surface melting on ice crystals. One even you could understand.
  • Corentin: From there, I would have to explain how the quasi-liquid film on said crystal can then be thermodynamically stabilized...
  • Erador: All right, all right, ye win! I'm sorry I asked.
  • Erador: But I can tell by yer attitude all this work isn't good for ye. You should join me for a swig o' wine.
  • Corentin: ...I'd rather not.
  • Erador: An' why not!?
  • Corentin: Research has shown that wine inhibits the brain's higher functions.
  • Erador: Fewer words, more wine. A glass might shake a brilliant new idea outta that massive head o' yours!
  • Corentin: But, my precious research—!
  • Corentin: All I desire is to carry out my research unimp—unimpe—without interruption. Are you listening, Erador?
  • Corentin: My research, on my terms. Why can they not—urp!—grant me this one thing!?
  • Erador: Yeah, well—
  • Corentin: This cannot stand, Erador! You hauled me out—hic—here, yet you haven't so much as drank—haven't touched your glass!
  • Erador: Oh, so yer an angry drunkard, are ye? Lovely.
  • Corentin: Me? A drunkard!? Prepa...balder...prepalderdash!
  • Corentin: It's the damn Ministry! All their restrickshons and secreshy!
  • Corentin: How are we to pro—hic!—move forward if we can't share our techniquesh? Am I wrong!?
  • Erador: Yer damned right! As always, o' course! About everythin'!
  • Corentin: Sittin' on all that knowlesh and skill iss...iss not good! Worse 'n me locking my—myself up here! I—!
  • Erador: Glorious silence. Thought the poor fool'd never shut up. Right then, off to bed with ye.

Groundbreaking Research[]

The research Corentin spoke of in his drunken stupor seems to be making progress, but...

  • Erador: What's so urgent ye can't let a man sleep?
  • Corentin: Nothing less than the completion of my groundbreaking research, Erador!
  • Erador: Oho! Well now, that is somethin'!
  • Corentin: Indeed it is! I've managed to thermodynamically stabilize the quasi-liquid film forming on the surface of the—
  • Erador: Yes, yes, I've heard all that—now tell it to me in words a man can understand!
  • Corentin: Right, well, in layman's terms, I have created ice that never melts.
  • Erador: See how simple— Did you say ice that never melts!?
  • Erador: That's mighty impressive, and all, but...what actual good does that do anyone?
  • Corentin: My dear, sweet, simple Erador—we can use my creation to forge weapons with no need for iron!
  • Erador: Sounds useful, if it works as ye say... But how's the durability?
  • Corentin: Silly soldier—do you take me for a fool? Of course I tested their durability. Worry not!
  • Corentin: A prototype shall arrive shortly. I bid you try it out for yourself.
  • Corentin: For better or worse you're the most experienced soldier I know, and so I'd have you handle it first.
  • Erador: That sounds big 'n' important. I reckon I'll take ye up on it!
  • Corentin: What news? Surely it's finished by now?
  • Wolffort Soldier: Fraid not. I come bearing unfortunate news from the smithy...
  • Wolffort Soldier: It seemed plenty sturdy at first, but shattered the moment he took a hammer to it.
  • Wolffort Soldier: He says it has a long way to go afore it can be used in place of iron, I'm afraid.
  • Corentin: Preposterous! My calculations were impeccable!
  • Corentin: Surely I have not forsaken my homeland in pursuit of a fool's errand!?
  • Erador: That's all a bit dramatic, innit? Ye can't have a breakthrough without breakin' a couple o' ice blades.
  • Erador: Ye know what'd wash away all that pain? A nice cold glass o' spirits.
  • Erador: Er—spirits? That's it! That unmeltin' ice of yours could chill 'em forever, could it not?
  • Erador: Groundbreakin' indeed! This invention of yours could still take the world by storm!
  • Wolffort Soldier: Haha, and I reckon the army'd have use for it as well. It'd keep our rations from goin' off!
  • Wolffort Soldier: Weapons be damned, ye've done very important work!
  • Corentin: The fact remains that my calculations were in error, so forgive me my reluctance to...
  • Erador: Less sulkin', more drinkin'! Ye succeeded, haven't ye!?
  • Erador: Right then, this'll be my treat. An' I won't be turnin' in 'til you do!
  • Corentin: ...Very well. Scientific breakthroughs never come easily, I suppose.
  • Corentin: Perhaps my next experiment shall be seeing how many rounds my everlasting ice can chill.
  • Corentin: Right, then—to the encampment with us! 'Tis time for a drink or three.
  • Erador: That's the spirit! Just promise me I won't have to haul yer drunken ass home this time.

Mid-Battle Conversations[]

Chapter III, Part II: A Land of Sand and Sun[]

vs. Plinius[]

  • Plinius: You understand, don't you, Corentin? You must let me go!
  • Corentin: As a fellow researcher, I understand your plight. Even so, I cannot condone this...

near Geela[]

  • Geela: I see. So ice heeds your call.
  • Corentin: Hm? Haven't we met before? What is your name?
  • Geela: I'm no one of note, I'm afraid. You must have me mistaken for someone else.

Chapter XX: No Turning Back[]

vs. Lyla[]

  • Corentin: Minister Lyla. I didn't think we'd meet again under such dire circumstances.
  • Corentin: I still have respect for your knowledge and for all I learned under your tutelage. You needn't remain a tool to this stifling theocracy.
  • Lyla: I failed you, Corentin. I could not stop you from turning your back on the Goddess.
  • Lyla: And now I must deliver Her punishment to you.

Final Chapter: Dance of the Automaton[]

vs. Automaton[]

  • Corentin: It wasn't just Aelfric they researched in secret... This is another rancid fruit of their experiments...
  • Corentin: I shan't stand idly by and let our research be corrupted!

Final Chapter: For Norzelia[]

vs. Idore[]

  • Corentin: You've perverted our research, Idore. No longer!
  • Idore: Aelfric was made to guide our flock to a greater tomorrow. Be grateful something you created will have a role in their salvation.
