Background[]

Before Hossabara had set up business in House Wolffort, she ran her own tavern with her son, Theo. Erador Ballentine was a frequent visitor of her tavern, and was known for his gluttinous appetite and unquenchable thirst. When Theo died in the Saltiron War, Hossabara's tavern fell on dark days. Healing What Ails People[]

The normally lively barkeep at the encampment lets out a heavy sigh, but what could be the reason?

  • Spirited Barkeep: ...What is the realm coming to?
  • Erador: Hail, fair maid!
  • Spirited Barkeep: Well, if it isn't Erador. Have a seat. You've ample choice.
  • Erador: Who are you and what've you done with the barkeep? The one I know ain't prone to melancholy.
  • Spirited Barkeep: She is when word of a fellow barkeep's misfortunes reaches her.
  • Spirited Barkeep: It's all in this letter: people are takin' to plunderin' to survive this war, and my friend's tavern was destroyed beyond repair.
  • Erador: Here's hopin' your fine establishment escapes unscathed.
  • Spirited Barkeep: Aye, I can't bear to think of what I'd do without this place...
  • Erador: My heart goes out to ye. As if times weren't hard enough with customers...
  • Spirited Barkeep: I can't think straight for worrying so much.
  • Spirited Barkeep: You're a soldier, aren't you? Can't you just go out there and crush your enemies so we can be done with all this?
  • Erador: Hah! If only it were so easy. What I wouldn't give to wield a flagon every day instead of a blade.
  • Spirited Barkeep: Never took you for the type to make excuses, Erador.
  • Serenoa: Erador is doing everything he can. The realm suffers because of my failings.
  • Spirited Barkeep: Forgive me, Lord Wolffort. It was hardly my intention to blame you.
  • Spirited Barkeep: What with things being as they are, I haven't been myself these days...
  • Spirited Barkeep: But enough of this. All the mopin' in the world won't change a thing. It's time for action.
  • Spirited Barkeep: My lord. As you can see, I'll have no choice but to shutter my tavern if the war doesn't end...and soon.
  • Spirited Barkeep: So let me join you. I think you'll find that pourin' ale isn't the only trick I have up my sleeve.
  • Hossabara: Ah, but where are my manners? Hossabara's the name, my lord, at your service.
  • Hossabara: A barkeep I may be, but good drink isn't the only way I know how to heal what ails people.
  • Erador: I can vouch for that, my lord. Hossabara's good to have around in a pinch.
  • Serenoa: Then I see no reason to refuse. You are most welcome among us.
  • Hossabara: Hah! Heartenin' to see you're the decisive type. I won't let you down!
  • Erador: An' you've made a good decision as well. Couldn't have picked a better lord to serve, I tell ye.
  • Hossabara: Aye, I gathered that the way you're always singing his praises.

Good for the Soul[]

Hossabara speaks of her past over a drink with Erador.

  • Erador: Ahh, that's the good stuff! Ain't no one can pour a pint like you.
  • Hossabara: I take coin for drink, not compliments. It's hard enough to keep this place running on my own as it is.
  • Erador: Need me to lend a hand?
  • Hossabara: Thought ye'd never ask! You can start by washin' the dishes, then restocking our foodstuffs, fixin' up that wobbly table, and—
  • Erador: A-aye...leave it to me.
  • Hossabara: Hah! I'm only playin'. I'd never put a paying customer to labor.
  • Erador: But that's an awful lot o' work for any one person. Ever give thought to findin' someone with whom ye might share the burden?
  • Hossabara: Ye can stop right there. The last thing I need is anyone else complicatin' my life.
  • Erador: Sounds like you're speakin' from experience.
  • Hossabara: I had myself a someone once, ye know. Special, like. Till he left me for a special-er someone.
  • Hossabara: Raised my son Theo all by myself after that. He'd be a man grown now...if the war hadn't taken him.
  • Erador: F-forgive me, Hossabara. Didn't mean to go drudgin' up painful memories.
  • Hossabara: No need for apologies. I don't know anyone who doesn't have a thing or two in their past that haunts 'em.
  • Hossabara: In truth, I'm more exhausted than anything. Must be the years takin' their toll...
  • Erador: Ain't got nothin' to do with age, and everythin' to do with the hardships you've overcome.
  • Erador: More impressive than an old soldier drownin' his sorrows in mead.
  • Hossabara: Hah! What kind of barkeep am I, letting my poor patron wallow?
  • Erador: Sometimes wallowin's good for the soul. C'mon, have a round with me. My treat.
  • Hossabara: Took ye long enough to make the offer. Now, what shall we toast to?
  • Erador: Hmm... How 'bout...to your son.
  • Hossabara: Aye...to Theo.

A Spot of Sunshine[]

Even the tavern—meant to be a place for people to forget their worries—sees its share of troubles.

  • Hossabara: Go on, have another glass!
  • Hossabara: I'm offering top-shelf drink for bottom-shelf prices tonight. No need to fret over your coinpurses!
  • Glenbrook Subject (M): See? This is why we keep coming back! Nobody treats us better than our Hossabara!
  • Erador: Quite the crowd tonight, eh? Good to see it.
  • Hossabara: All thanks to you for supplying me with that mead.
  • Erador: Thanks to my good fortune, ye mean. I got it for so cheap on account of the batch not measurin' quite up to the brewer's usual standards.
  • Hossabara: Still, look at how happy it's made them.
  • Hossabara: There's nothing I love more than seeing my tavern full to bursting like this. Thank you, Erador, truly.
  • Erador: It's...it's nothin', honest...
  • Hossabara: Ack! And just like that they've nearly drank me dry. Might have to close up early tonight.
  • Glenbrook Soldier (M): Celebrating something, Hossabara? Whatever it is, we'll drink to that. Pour us a round!
  • Hossabara: I wish I could. Seems the barrels have run dry tonight, but if you'll come back on the morrow—
  • Glenbrook Soldier (M): Run dry!?
  • Glenbrook Soldier (M): You've enough for these drunkards, yet can't spare a drop for those of us who're riskin' our lives for you on the battlefield!?
  • Glenbrook Subject (M): Hey! Who're you callin' a drunkard!?
  • Erador: Don't you fools go spoilin' the one spot of happiness we've had in a long while.
  • Hossabara: Enough! My tavern's a place for forgettin' troubles, not stirrin' them up!
  • Hossabara: You'd do well not to look down your noses at the very people you've sworn an oath to protect!
  • Hossabara: You want respect? Go out there and earn it by ending the war. Then there'll be drink aplenty to go around!
  • Glenbrook Subject (M): You tell 'em, Hossabara! They're no better'n us!
  • Hossabara: You lot aren't blameless either, you know! These soldiers do put their lives on the line to protect yours.
  • Hossabara: They get enough grief on the battlefield without you giving it to them off it.
  • Glenbrook Soldier (M): I'm sorry. I don't know what came over me...
  • Glenbrook Subject (M): No, I...I shouldn't have let my temper flare.
  • Erador: Look, there's still some drink left here. How's about you raise a glass together?
  • Glenbrook Subject (M): Yeah. You can have some of ours, too.
  • Glenbrook Soldier (M): Well, don't mind if I do...
  • Erador: Level head you've got on your shoulders there, Hossabara.
  • Hossabara: It helped that you pitched in when you did.
  • Glenbrook Soldier (M): Ahhhhhh! Now that hits the spot!
  • Glenbrook Subject (M): Doesn't it? Here, I'll pour you another!
  • Hossabara: See? Now this is what I live for. Giving people a place they can come together and leave the worries of the world behind for a while.
  • Hossabara: Somehow, I know this is what Theo would have wanted me to do. If only I could raise a glass with him...
  • Erador: Aye, I reckon he'd be proud. You've made a spot o' sunshine for people who don't get much of it these days.
  • Erador: People like me.
  • Hossabara: What with business boomin' again, it looks like I'm going to have my hands full for a while.
  • Hossabara: Don't you worry for your mama, Theo. As long as there's ale to be poured and smiles on her customer's faces, she'll be just fine.

Mid-Battle Conversations[]

Chapter XVIII, Part II: Bound by Sorrow[]

vs. Gustadolph[]

  • Hossabara: You talk of big ideals, but ye serve no one but yerself!
  • Gustadolph: And who are you? Another fly buzzing in my ears.
  • Hossabara: Ye'll find out who I am soon enough. One final lesson before yer last moments!

Chapter XIX: A Dream in Winter[]

vs. Gustadolph[]

  • Hossabara: Have you any idea how much unhappiness was born of your "freedom"?
  • Gustadolph: What arrogance you speak. Why would I help those who do nothing to help themselves?
  • Hossabara: You think that arrogance? I see now that a better world cannot exist with you in it!

Chapter XIX: The Fortress That Is Faith[]

vs. Exharme[]

  • Hossabara: That's a mighty fine horse. Raised with love and care, and make no mistake.
  • Hossabara: It ain't too late for you. Lord Serenoa will show you mercy if you but lay down your arms.
  • Exharme: I have chosen my path, and I will see it to the end.

Final Chapter: Blessed Freedom[]

vs. Idore[]

  • Idore: I shall not allow outsiders to make a mockery of our history and traditions.
  • Hossabara: You'd cut down a horse for whinnying the wrong way, you old bastard. You think the Roselle want to go back to living under someone like that?

Final Chapter: For Norzelia[]

vs. Idore[]

  • Idore: I am eternal...My judgement absolute!
  • Hossabara: I've had enough of your preaching. No one'll listen to your orders after we're done with you.
  • Idore: I speak the truth. If you are too foolish to heed my words, then there is little I can do.
