Profile/Personality[]
The Dawnspear of Glenbrook[]
Maxwell is the strongest warrior in the Kingdom of Glenbrook, and one of the greatest warriors in Norzelia. First seen in Chapter II: To Arms, Brave Warriors, Maxwell is tasked with not only training Roland but protecting the young prince with his life. His relationship with Roland had grown to the point where Roland Glenbrook longed for Maxwell to be his father, rather than the indifferent Regna Glenbrook. Maxwell faced off against Serenoa in the Norzelian tournament, only to best the young swordsman immediately.
In Chapter VI: Remember Me, the Grand Duchy of Aesfrost invades the Kingdom of Glenbrook. As Prince Frani and King Regna are slain, Maxwell is given a final order by his fallen king to escort Roland to safety. While Maxwell is able to escort Roland to the rescue ship, Maxwell is struck down by General Avlora. He falls into the Crown City river, losing his staple mask in the proccess.

Character Stories[]
The Dawnspear[]
Within the woods, a man bids farewell to his Rosellan companions. In his hand, he clutches a familiar spear...
- Rosellan (M): Must you go, Ser?
- ???: I regret to say I must. I have been idle for long enough.
- ???: But know this: I shall forever be indebted to the Roselle.
- ???: I know not why fate delivered my battered body to the shores of your village, but I am fortunate that it did.
- ???: I owe my life to your kindness. Thank you.
- Rosellan (F): You'll have no debt with us. We only did what was right.
- Rosellan (F): But where will you go? Safety is a luxury few are afforded these days.
- ???: The war rages still, and so long as it does, I must fight with every inch of my being to end it.
- Rosellan (M): A single man can't fix this tangled mess of a world.
- ???: Ah, but I am not alone. Every moment my allies risk life and limb without me is a moment I owe them for their bravery.
- ???: I must rejoin them at once.
- Rosellan (F): I see there's no convincing you otherwise. Very well, but we expect to hear news of your victory soon.
- ???: I sense the world is on the cusp of great change—change for the better. When it comes, let us celebrate its arrival together.
- ???: Well met, friends. I require passage to see Lord Serenoa.
- Wolffort Soldier: And who are you? If you want an audience, you'll have to wait behind the rest.
- Wolffort Soldier: Wait... That cape... It can't be! You're Ser Maxwell!
- Wolffort Soldier: (SHARP) Milord! Ser Maxwell has returned!
- Maxwell: My apologies for my abrupt departure, my lord. Full glad am I to see you have managed without me.
- Serenoa: Ser Maxwell!? You're alive!
- Maxwell: Aye, and none the worse for wear, I hope. It seems fate would have me take up my spear once more.
- Serenoa: Where have you been!? We all...we all feared the worst...
- Maxwell: Avlora's fell blow cast me into the river, and its cold embrace washed away my memories along with my pride.
- Maxwell: I awoke in a village of kindhearted folk. I might have stayed there, blissful in ignorance, had news of your exploits not reached them.
- Maxwell: It was then that old memories stirred. Prideful memories. Painful memories.
- Maxwell: My purpose became clear: I must end this war, or perish in the attempt.
- Maxwell: I hope that I have not come too late to make a difference.
- Serenoa: Of course not. We would be honored to have you fight by our side.
- Serenoa: I only hope you can say the same for us, Dawnspear.
A Mask Removed[]
The unmasked Maxwell treads a new path and speaks with Hughette of his past.
- Hughette: That you would return to us hale and whole... 'Tis a much-needed fortune in these trying times.
- Maxwell: With luck, soon my return will not be the only cause for celebration. I am glad to see you unharmed, Hughette.
- Maxwell: I would choose none but you to stand by Prince Roland's side in my absence.
- Hughette: Thank you. However, I am afraid I have far to go before I can measure up to your legend.
- Hughette: A legend that seems to have begun a new chapter...now that you have doffed that mask of yours.
- Hughette: Forgive me for prying, but I must ask: why did you wear it for so long?
- Maxwell: Truth be told, I have not thought upon those reasons for some time.
- Maxwell: When I served Glenbrook as its Master of Swords, I did not wear it.
- Hughette: You were Master of Swords? The Dawnspear?
- Maxwell: Indeed. My star was rising, and I was tasked with investigating a group of nobles who were dealing in stolen works of art.
- Maxwell: A simple assignment, or so I thought. I was yet young, and unaware of the pettiness of those who consider themselves to be our betters.
- Maxwell: I apprehended several of the criminals, but one escaped. That was my grave mistake.
- Maxwell: In shadows they harbored their grudges, until they exacted their revenge. But the life they took was not mine—it was my love's, the woman to whom I had promised my future.
- Hughette: What? I never knew...
- Maxwell: The villain was eventually brought to justice, but no sentence could bring back what had been stolen from me.
- Maxwell: Had I only been more thorough, and not been so naïve. Then she...she would still be...
- Hughette: Ser Maxwell, there is no way you could have known. The blame falls not on you.
- Maxwell: Nay, my inexperience sowed the seeds. And I will reap their bitter fruit until the day I die.
- Maxwell: I swore I would never again allow someone I loved to come to harm. To ensure that, I had to discard who I was.
- Maxwell: I gave up my title as Master of Swords, hid my true face behind a mask. I spoke only with my spear.
- Hughette: And you were reborn as Glenbrook's fiercest warrior, the Dawnspear. Your feats surpassed the imagination of even the most silver-tongued of bards...
- Hughette: Forgive me. I still tend to get lost in the stories, even though you are standing here before me.
- Maxwell: No, I should thank you. There are few who would understand my struggles, but I believe you are one.
- Maxwell: House Wolffort has seen its share of misfortunes. That you all still walk with your heads held high is an inspiration to all.
- Maxwell: I was brought back from the brink of death to fight by your side. To face the dangers ahead undaunted and unhidden.
- Maxwell: I may owe fate for my return, but I shall fight tooth and nail before it takes aught from me again!
- Maxwell: At least, such are the things I tell myself, in my quiet moments. I only pray the words can give me strength when it matters most.
- Hughette: They will. No doubt you are stronger now than you have ever been.
- Maxwell: Thank you. I no longer need to hide in fear. I will not look away.
A Righteous Kingdom[]
During training with Hughette, Maxwell tells her things he could not tell Roland himself...
- Maxwell: I see you have not neglected your training, Hughette. I must take a moment to catch my breath.
- Hughette: You are winded—good. I often worry that my skill is lacking. I wonder what Roland would think to see us practicing together.
- Hughette: He expects much from me. I only hope not to disappoint him.
- Maxwell: He has become a fine warrior in his own right, has he not?
- Hughette: Indeed he has. He would have been a worthy successor to King Regna...if only his birth would have allowed it.
- Maxwell: Doubtless the king would have considered Roland too pure of heart to wear the crown.
- Hughette: And is that not a kingly virtue? Or do all rulers require some measure of ruthlessness to keep their people in order?
- Maxwell: You are closer to the truth than you know. Prince Frani had evidence that his father was turning a blind eye to the illicit dealings of his subjects.
- Hughette: What? What dealings?
- Maxwell: House Telliore was peddling watered-down wine and fattening their coffers with the profit.
- Maxwell: King Regna found out about their scheme, but the timing was unfortunate. It had been an arduous year. The king was loath to risk the loss of taxes, so he let it pass.
- Hughette: I see... And Prince Frani knew of this?
- Maxwell: Yes, and he was goaded into coercing his own father by Minister Patriatte.
- Maxwell: Perhaps what Prince Frani feared the most was that the king would pass him over and cede the throne to Roland.
- Maxwell: So he threatened to inform House Falkes of King Regna's indiscretion if the king did not guarantee his succession.
- Hughette: That's... I...I never knew.
- Maxwell: Over time, Prince Frani came to realize how he had been manipulated by Minister Patriatte.
- Maxwell: He hated himself for the actions he could not take back. And he envied Roland for his blissful ignorance to it all.
- Hughette: Do you think Frani believed Roland to be a better fit for the throne than himself?
- Maxwell: In his heart of hearts? I do. I have no doubt King Regna did too, when the weight of the schemes and intrigue that plagued his nation weighed most heavily on his shoulders.
- Maxwell: Perhaps Regna hoped that Roland could succeed where he had failed, and navigate through the deception without compromising his ideals.
- Hughette: So that is how it was...
- Hughette: I see now why Roland looked up to you like a father.
- Maxwell: The rot that spread through Glenbrook was not unique. Wheresoever men fight for power and influence, it spreads.
- Maxwell: But we need not submit to it. If ever there were a group of people that could set this kingdom to rights, it is here.
- Maxwell: We can rebuild Glenbrook to be more glorious and true than it has ever been.
- Hughette: I agree, Ser Maxwell.
- Maxwell: When the war is over, it will not be strength of arms that will carry us through to the future, but the strength of our words and convictions.
- Maxwell: My brush with death has allowed me to see this clearly. A path forged by spears and swords will only end in a river of blood.
- Maxwell: I only pray that peace comes before we are consumed by it.
- Maxwell: And when it does, may we have the courage to set down our weapons and begin our true fight: to see that we never need pick them up again.
- Maxwell: Will you stand by my side, when the time comes? Shall we build this new world together?
- Hughette: Yes, we shall.

vs. Idore[]
- Maxwell: It is our ability to face death with dignity that makes human life precious. One who would forsake that has no right to lead others.
- Idore: And what have you done for your fellow man, Dawnspear? Killed them, time and again. Don't speak to me of humanity!
